Connecticut Valley Agricultural Land Initiative - VALI

Connecticut VALI (Connecticut Valley Agricultural Land Initiative)

A Program of the Northern Connecticut Land Trust

Cigar smokers agree that Connecticut shade tobacco makes the best cigar wrappers in the world, and it is grown only in the Connecticut Valley. But poorly planned suburban expansion has resulted in large swaths of Connecticut Valley farmland being lost forever and there are fewer acres of prime farmland in the Connecticut Valley now than there were acres of tobacco in its heyday – and farms continue to be developed at the rate of thousands of acres per year. If something doesn't change, one day there won't be enough tobacco land in the Valley to meet demand. The Northern Connecticut Land Trust is conserving working farms in the Connecticut Valley, but land here is expensive and only a relative few of the thousands of farms in the Valley have been protected by the combined efforts of national, state, and local governments and land conservation organizations. We can do better, but we need your help. We have just launched the Connecticut Valley Agricultural Land Initiative (Connecticut VALI) to raise funds from a broad base of interested donors. The Northern Connecticut Land Trust is a non-profit, 501(c) 3 conservation organization staffed entirely by volunteers and supported by donations. We have protected over 1500 acres of land so far, but barely 200 acres of Connecticut Valley farmland.
